FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The nation’s most influential trucking group has endorsed the collection of electronic data for accident analysis as long as the same rules are applied to both trucks and passenger vehicles.

The policy, adopted Feb. 8 by the board of directors of American Trucking Associations, says government and industry should develop standards for use of the data rather than for on-board recorders that collect information.

The policy did not change the group’s opposition to government use of electronic data to track drivers’ compliance with hours-of-service rules.

“Carriers should not be required to purchase transponders or any other kind of electronic identification device for any reason,” ATA’s board said in a vote at the organization’s winter meeting here.
