All drivers in Indiana are directed to give road workers a wide berth or face fines of up to $10,000 established by a new law.

The law, which applies to truckers and motorists alike, took effect July 1, a day that Gov. Frank O’Bannon de-clared Highway Workers Safety Awareness Day.

Motorists will now be required to change lanes if possible, or at least to slow down and use caution, when passing stopped highway maintenance vehicles and tow trucks flashing their amber warning lights.

The requirement expands on a law the state enacted in 1999 directing motorists to afford similar courtesies to stopped police, fire and other emergency vehicles displaying their flashing lights.
