Illinois lawmakers responded to dizzyingly high fuel prices by suspending the state’s 5% sales tax on diesel and gasoline for six months.

Gov. George Ryan called state lawmakers away from their vacations for a special one-day session of the legislature on June 29 to deal with gasoline prices approaching $2 and diesel prices not far behind.

The action mirrors similar events in neighboring Indiana, where Gov. Frank O’Bannon temporarily lifted his state’s 5% sales tax on gasoline.

Fred Serpe, executive director of the Illinois Transportation Association, said the Illinois decision would save trucking millions of dollars.
