Closing arguments have been filed in a lawsuit challenging Idaho’s weight-distance tax.

The lawsuit, filed by the Idaho Motor Transport Association and American Trucking Associations, argues that tax breaks granted by the state to carriers of certain timber, agricultural and mineral products discriminate against the larger trucking community.

The trucking groups hope that the court will strike down the exemptions and that this will unify the state’s truckers in the fight to get rid of the weight-distance tax altogether.

Idaho is among five states that still have a weight-distance tax. Its opponents among trucking ranks argue that the tax system is costly, difficult to collect and easy to evade. But some in-state trucking interests enjoy reduced rates and do not support repeal efforts.
