The governor’s signature and a state judge’s nod are all that are needed to complete the repeal of Idaho’s weight-distance tax, now that the state Legislature has passed the measure.

Gov. Dirk Kempthorne is expected to give his approval to a pair of bills that replace the $40-million-a-year weight distance tax with higher truck registration fees, and return $27 million to interstate truckers who over-paid the levy.

As a result of the repeal, long-haul interstate truckers are likely to see a reduction in their Idaho tax bills, according to the registration fee schedule attached to the legislation.

The Senate passed the repeal measure March 28 ("Idaho Senate Votes to Scrap Ton-Mile Tax," 4-3, p.1), and the House followed suit three days later.
