The Department of Transportation’s much-anticipated hours-of-service reforms should be made public within a few weeks, according to a top agency official.

The proposal will take into account the diverse makeup of trucking, Assistant Transportation Secretary Mortimer L. Downey said during a speech before the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
“There will be different types of regimes aimed at different types of operations,” he told his audience on Feb. 1. “There are differences between driving over the road, where the incentive is to drive as far as possible to make as much money as possible, and someone who is making deliveries for whom driving is not a major part of the job.”
On Dec. 3, the proposed changes to the six-decades-old hours rule were sent by DOT to the Office of Management and Budget, a unit within the White House that is reviewing the reforms.

“OMB doesn’t take forever on these things,” Downey said of the expected turnaround.
