BRISBANE, Calif. — Kim Hioe, a corporate vice president in Santa Clara, Calif., can quantify his affection for Circle International Group — the more he likes the freight forwarder the less frequently he sees its personnel.

“The physical counting they do is amazing. They tell me how much they’ve shipped to customers and how much is left. I used to go to their place monthly to check, and they were pretty accurate.

“Now I only go quarterly, and if this keeps up, I’ll only go once every six months,” said Hioe, who represents the telecommunications firm TSI of Taiwan in the United States. TSI uses Circle’s facilities here, near San Francisco International Airport.

While Circle’s management appreciates the notion of happy customers, personnel in its San Francisco headquarters are probably using more mental energy to ponder the future.
