Governor, Kansas Truckers Differ Over Tax Increases
Proposal Would Raise Fuel Tax 1 Cent; Registration Fees May Go Up 3%
Kansas Gov. Bill Graves’s plan to raise his state’s motor fuels taxes and truck fees is drawing opposition from the Kansas Motor Carriers Association.In mid-January, Graves, who comes from a trucking family and who is slated to become president of American Trucking Associations next January after his gubernatorial term expires, proposed a penny-a-gallon increase in the tax on diesel fuel and gasoline and a 3% hike in vehicle registration fees as part of a fiscal 2003 budget that addresses the state government’s $426 million shortfall.For the full story, see the Fed. 4 print edition of Transport Topics.
