FRA Sets Train-Collision Prevention Standards
he Federal Railroad Administration said it has set new standards governing systems that would help trains avoid collisions.
So-called "positive train control" systems can improve rail safety by using technology to automatically control train movements and speed, including bringing trains to a stop, the agency said.
PTC can prevent collisions between trains, provide warning of other on-track equipment or hazards, and enforce track speed limits, it said.
“The safety benefits of PTC technology are real and its accelerated implementation holds the promise of reducing certain types of railroad accidents,” said Robert Jamison, the agency’s acting administrator.
