A trickle of details has begun to appear on how the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration plans to cut the number of truck-related fatalities in half within the decade.

Initial steps toward the goal set by Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater are spelled out in an FMCSA performance plan, submitted to Congress earlier this month. Among the steps are improving safety enforcement by targeting high-risk operations, heightening research efforts and giving greater emphasis to safety compliance.

The new truck and bus agency also is asking for more money and personnel to step up enforcement.

DOT plans to use the fatality figure as one of several gauges to measure FMCSA’s performance in meeting its objectives.
