Florida Port Sees 10% Tonnage Increase
ort Everglades in Broward County, Fla., has set a record for containerized cargo, due to increased trade with Latin America and Asia, the Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) Sun-Sentinel reported.
The port handled more than 5 million tons of containerized cargo for the first time in its fiscal year that just ended, which was 10% higher than last year, the paper said. Port officials said they expect tonnage to increase another 10% this fiscal year.
Port Everglades also picked up some freight rerouted from the Gulfport, Miss., port that was damaged by Hurricane Katrina, officials told the paper.
