An experiment under consideration by the Florida Department of Transportation would test the effects of allowing certain 95,000-pound trucks on state highways.
Up to 2,000 permits for the heavier combinations would be issued annually with restrictions: The vehicle would not be allowed to make stops on the way to the ultimate destination and the loads would have to be in sealed containers.
The Florida Trucking Association suggested the idea as a way of placing domestic freight movements on equal footing with international marine shipments.
Florida issues single-trip permits for trucks hauling sealed containers destined to be loaded onto ships traveling to foreign climes. The vehicles may gross out at 95,000 pounds.
