Fleets Struggle to Move Freight in Devastated Gulf Coast

| Staff Reporterrucking companies in the hurricane-devastated coastal areas of the Southeast struggled to conduct business last week, as they dealt with massive losses, insurance questions, displaced employees, crippled communications and drastically reduced orders because many of their customers’ businesses were damaged or destroyed.
Working around the storm was a major operational obstacle, carrier executives told Transport Topics, as cellphone service was severely damaged and fuel difficult to find.
Often incommunicado, drivers wove their way through detours and searched for fueling stations with enough diesel to fill their tanks.
