Fleet Managers Unsure of How to Prepare for 2007 Medium-Duty Models
edium-duty fleet managers waiting for the next generation of low-emission diesel engines are aware that changes in fuel and engines are coming, but they are not quite sure how to prepare for it.
The Environmental Protection Agency has said that in 12 months it would require refineries to produce diesel fuel with far less sulfur than in current formulas. By next October, ultra-low-sulfur diesel should be available nationwide.
The fuel would be required then so that 2007 engines with their updated emission control technologies — including diesel particulate filters — would be able to meet particulate matter emission standards of 0.01 grams per brake-horsepower-hour, a 90% reduction from current standard of 0.10 grams per unit of output.
