On Sept. 29, a select group of Florida truckers set out to become the extra eyes and ears watching and guarding the highways.

Florida became the second state to launch American Trucking Associations’ Highway Watch program, which enlists specially trained truckers to report problems on the roads so that authorities and media outlets can react quickly with accurate information.

Modeled after a Pennsylvania program, Highway Watch began in Colorado in November 1998 (11-30-98, p. 3). Oregon plans to roll out its version of the program in November, and ATA plans to blanket the country with truckers who are “looking for trouble.”

Highway Watch was launched in Florida using public information officers from the Florida Highway Patrol and seven members of the Florida Trucking Association’s Road Team.
