FDA Issues Rules for Holding Suspect Food Cargoes

| Staff Reporterhe U.S. Food and Drug Administration last week issued procedures for detaining food shipments suspected of being viewed as a threat to humans or animals.
The rule would allow FDA to detain a truck for up to 30 days if government officials suspect that its contents could pose a threat.
“It is another unanticipated consequence of 9/11 that happens to affect the trucking industry,” said Fletcher Hall, executive director of the Agricultural and Food Transporters Conference, which is affiliated with American Trucking Associations.
