The proposed sulfur standard in diesel fuel for trucks and buses has not generated a groundswell of controversy and appears to be headed for adoption by the Environmental Protection Agency before year’s end.

“That is our goal and it has not changed,” said Catherine C. Milbourn, senior press officer with the EPA. The comment period deadline of Aug. 14 will not be extended, she said.

The rule would apply to diesel fuel sold on and after June 1, 2006.

According to an agency spokesman, about 7,000 “mostly positive comments” have been received on the proposal to reduce the amount of fine diesel particulate, which can be inhaled into the lungs, and the amount of emissions that can mingle in the atmosphere to produce smog.
