The Environmental Protection Agency last week proposed phase one of its plan to drastically curtail truck pollution within the next decade.

As far as heavy-duty diesel engines go, EPA’s plan for the 2004 model year contained few surprised or big changes from what was previously known to be coming down the pike.

The agency’s requirements are expected to cost the industry more than $700 per new engine and force engine makers to employ technology heretofore unseen in commercial trucks.

An even bigger challenge awaits engine manufacturers in the future, because the agency intends to propose phase two of its grand plan — emissions cuts for 2007 equal to a 180% drop from today’s standards — by early next year.
