The Environmental Protection Agency wants to hear from the public about the latest version of its evaluation of the negative health problems caused by diesel exhaust.
EPA’s National Center for Environmental Assessment has been working on the evaluation for more than six years.
However, the process requires that an independent panel of scientists known as the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Board approve the assessment before it becomes final.
So far that has not happened. The board and EPA are wrangling over exactly how strong a link between diesel and cancer is supported by the scientific evidence ("Diesel Emissions-Cancer Link Cited in Revised EPA Report," 11-22-99, p. 5).
