Daimler Truck North America unit Detroit has introduced the DT12-VL, an automated manual transmission designed to boost payload capacity and off-road performance for heavy-duty vocational trucks.
The DT12-VL expands Detroit’s DT12 Vocational series, joining the DT12-V and DT12-VX. Built for weight-sensitive applications such as mixers, dump trucks and bulk haulers, the new model is 125 pounds lighter than the DT12-V, offering improved efficiency without compromising durability.
The transmission delivers 1,650 pound-feet of torque with 12 forward speeds and up to four reverse speeds. A wide ratio range — from 11.67 in first gear to 0.78 in top gear — supports smooth shifting and control on varied terrain. It can handle gross combination weights up to 80,000 pounds and includes a rear power takeoff for added versatility.
Three vocational driving modes enhance jobsite performance: Off-Road mode maintains traction on uneven surfaces; Rock-Free mode helps free stuck vehicles while reducing driveline stress; and Paver Mode enables seamless transitions for continuous paving operations.
“The DT12-VL is a testament to our commitment to the vocational customer and to our ability to adapt and innovate on proven solutions,” said Aaron Scates, vice president of vocational and medium-duty market development for DTNA.
Compatible with the Detroit DD13 engine, the DT12-VL will be available in Freightliner 114SD and Western Star 47X models. Production is scheduled to begin in December.
