Drug Testing Rules Target Cheaters

Truck drivers will have a harder time cheating on drug tests under changes to the regulations imposed by the Department of Transportation.

The rules, which take effect Jan. 18, are intended to catch drivers who try to substitute someone else’s urine specimen for one of their own or submit a sample taken before a drug was ingested, DOT officials said.

They are also intended to uncover drivers who might take other drugs to mask a positive test result. DOT said several products on the market do just that.

The makers of Ready Clean guarantee their over-the-counter product will produce a negative test result when used an hour before the exam. Another advertiser boasts powdered-urine products — add water and you get instant, untainted urine — that are “designed to fool any testing center.”
