The national average price of diesel fuel dropped for the second straight week, but the price of crude oil was on the rise due to predictions of shortages in the autumn and winter.

The retail price of diesel fuel, as reported by the federal Energy Information Administration, was $1.402 a gallon on May 8. That was 1.6 cents below the previous week and 9.4 cents below the March 13 price of $1.496.
However, the price is still at a lofty level.
“The year-to-date retail average is a whopping 42.5% above the same period last year,” said Diego Saltes, an analyst with the Economics and Statistics Group of American Trucking Associations.
