The Department of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍøland Security’s nuclear detection office has begun a pilot program to provide maritime radiation detection capabilities for state and local authorities in Washington state and California, DHS said Sept. 5.
The three-year West Coast Maritime pilot program will focus on San Diego and Puget Sound, Wash., and involves the development of radiation-detection systems.
It will attempt to reduce the risk of illegal transport of radiological and nuclear threats on recreational or small commercial vessels, the department said.
DHS anticipates investing about $10 million in the pilot program, which will be conducted in coordination with the Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection.
