aimlerChrysler AG sold a record number of commercial vehicles in 2005 as demand rose for freight deliveries and construction equipment, Bloomberg reported Monday.

Sales rose 16% to 824,900 trucks and buses, from 712,200 vehicles in 2004, DaimlerChrysler said in a statement.

Demand in areas outside its main markets in North America, Europe and Latin America rose 31% to 266,900 units, the company reported.

Growth at the commercial-vehicle division has helped the German firm blunt the effects of falling profit at its Mercedes auto division, Bloomberg reported.

DaimlerChrysler is the parent of U.S. truck maker Freightliner LLC, Sterling Trucks and Western Star Trucks.
