Cyberattack at United Natural Foods Affects Orders

United Natural Foods Inc. has taken some of its systems offline while it investigates “unauthorized activity” with outside cybersecurity help, it said June 9 in a filing with the U.S Securities and Exchange Commission.
The company took the systems down and brought in forensics experts after noticing the intrusion on June 5, it said. This has caused business disruptions including affecting the firm’s ability to fulfill and distribute customer orders, the filing said. UNFI also has notified law enforcement about the unauthorized activity, the filing said.
“As we work through this issue, our customers, suppliers, and associates are our highest priority,” UNFI said in a statement on its website. “We are working closely with them to minimize disruption as much as possible.”
UNFI ranks No. 14 on theTransport Topics Top 100 list of the largest private carriersin North America, and No. 1 amongtop grocery carriers.
United Natural Foods offers roughly 250,000 products including frozen foods, perishable and bulk groceries as well as wellness products,the company said. It has 53 distribution centers and warehouses.
The Rhode Island-based wholesaler said last year it had entered into an agreement to serve as the primary distributor for Amazon.com Inc.’s Whole Foods grocery markets.
The investigation to assess the scope and impact of the incident is ongoing.

Amazon.com Inc. ranks No. 1 on the TT Top 100 list of the largest logistics carriers in North America, No. 12 on the TT100 list of the largest private carriers and No. 1 on the Top 50 Global Freight list.
It wasn’t immediately clear if the incident at United Natural Foods was related to similar events that have disrupted stores.
U.K. chains Marks & Spencer Group andCo-op also experiencedcybersecurity issues in April. M&S said the issue forced it to halt contactless payments and created some gaps on shelves while it took IT systems offline. That companysaid in May it was expectinga $403 million hit to operating profit this fiscal year from the incident.
