Gov. John G. Rowland wants to get rid of a Connecticut property tax exemption for corporation fleet trucks that has not gone into effect.

Last June, Rowland signed into law an exemption from state and municipal property taxes for trucks weighing more than 55,000 pounds in private fleets. This extension of the 1996 tax break for for-hire fleet vehicles was not to take effect until August. In both cases the exemption applies only to new trucks and is good for five years after the purchase date.

However, in the governor’s 2001 budget proposal, submitted to the legislature Feb. 9, there is a provision that would eliminate the tax break for private carriers. It does not touch the exemption for for-hire carriers.

Michael Cicchetti, undersecretary of the state Office of Policy and Budget, said extending the exemption to private fleets “went too far.”
