President Clinton has warned Congress that he intends to veto its new Labor Department appropriations bill because it contains a prohibition on developing new ergonomics rules for the nation’s industries.
Most U.S. business groups oppose the new rules, and some trucking officials have warned that the ergonomics plan could cost truckers billions of dollars a year.
Both the Senate and House have agreed on an appropriations bill for the Labor Department that contains language prohibiting any federal money from being used to develop or implement any “proposed, temporary, or final standard on ergonomic protection.”
The White House said Clinton would veto the bill because the Republican-controlled House and Senate are not complying with his demands they drop the ban.
