anadian holding company Clarke Inc. reported first-quarter net income of about $1.6 million or 13 cents a share, compared with $4.4 million or 50 cents a year earlier.

Revenue rose to about $35.7 million from $29.5 million a year ago, the company said in a statement.

Clarke’s income from continuing operations was about $890,000 million in the “seasonally slow quarter,” it said. Last year’s comparable figure was $3.5 million.

The company said improved pre-tax results were attributable to its freight transportation segment. Its real estate and warehousing broke even for the quarter, it said.

Ontario-based Clarke, which operates in the truckload and less-than-truckload sectors via its Clarke Transport unit, is ranked No. 66 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
