Trucking companies base fuel purchasing decisions on regional variations in prices, and that tendency has increased with the advent of products or policies that point drivers to truck stops with the lower diesel prices.

Tony Stroncheck, president of Pro-Miles Software, said that since the fuel prices started to go through the roof earlier this year, there has been more demand for his company’s products in helping carriers find the least expensive fuel. Pro-Miles offers its services either online or through the purchase of a CD-ROM to install the program on a computer.

Bob Jarvis, OptiStop product manger for Logistics.com in Burlington, Mass., said that his company also has seen a run-up in customers since the fuel rate increase.

“Fuel should be at the forefront of motor carriers’ mind because it is still their second highest cost,” he said.
