Bush Picks Sandberg as Permanent FMCSA Head

President Bush said he intends to nominate Annette M. Sandberg to the administrator position of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, where she has been serving as acting administrator in recent months.

Bush made the announcement Feb. 28 along with several other personnel selections.

Sandberg told Transport Topics that she was gratified to be selected.

No date had been set for Sandberg’s nomination hearing, said a spokesman with the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.

Sandberg was appointed to be deputy administrator of the agency regulating truck safety in late November and became acting administrator in mid-December, succeeding Joseph Clapp who retired.

Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta previously outlined the administration’s plan to promote Sandberg in an interview with Transport Topics (Click here for related coverage.) .

Sandberg had been deputy administrator with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

She told congressmen at a subcommittee hearing that one of her major duties so far had been signing the proposal to reform the commercial drivers’ hours of service. The proposal is under review by the Office of Management and Budget.
