n a tribute marking the 50th anniversary of the U.S. interstate highway system, American Trucking Associations’ America's Road Team captains are rolling across the country in a trucking convoy through next Thursday.

The convoy left San Francisco Friday and in two separate routes will be in Kansas and Nebraska Thursday. It will conclude in Washington, D.C., next Thursday.

America's Road Team is a national program led by a small group of professional truck drivers who have superior driving skills and safety records, to promote highway safety.

The cross-country trip of 20 vehicles is being sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, which represents the states’ transportation departments.

Among those on the tour is President Eisenhower’s great-grandson Merrill Eisenhower Atwater, who said he had always taken the interstate system for granted until he signed up for the trip, the Associated Press reported.

Photos, information, and daily notes from the road are available at ATA’s Web site,
