Arkansas Best Corp. Earnings, Revenue Rise

rkansas Best Corp., the parent of less-than-truckload carrier ABF Freight System, said Monday its second-quarter profit rose to $32.3 million or $1.26 cents a share, up from $23.4 million or 91 cents a year earlier.

img src="/sites/default/files/images/articles/arkansasbestlogo.gif" width=70 align=right>Revenue rose 12% to $479.3 million, while operating expenses increased to $432.8 million from $390.5 million last year.

ABF Freight System, the company’s largest subsidiary, saw its revenue rise to $466.9 million from $384.1 million, a per-day increase of 11.8% over the previous second quarter.



The unit’s operating income was $46.4 million, up from $38.1 million in 2005. Per-day tonnage rose 6.4%.

In June, the company completed the sale of its Clipper intermodal and freight forwarding unit. Discontinued operations include an after-tax gain on the sale of Clipper of 12 cents a share. In addition, discontinued operations include after-tax income of 1 cent per share associated with Clipper’s second quarter operating results.

Arkansas Best is ranked No. 17 on the 2006 Transport Topics 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian trucking companies.
