Detroit Chosen for Terminal
Canadian Pacific Railway is to build a $7 million Detroit intermodal terminal in order to expand its Expressway service, which currently goes between Montreal and Toronto. The railroad intends to market the service to trucking companies as a way to avoid highway shipping between Montreal and Detroit. Half of the terminal's funding will be split evenly between the Michigan and local governments. The railroad also plans to put out secured equipment notes for the financing of the 101 locomotives it added to its fleet in 1999. Following two recent truck wrecks in the Atlanta area, the Georgia Department of Transportation is considering a $170 million plan that would, among other things, ask truckers not to use highways in the Atlanta area at rush hour.
DOT Commissioner Wayne Shackelford says the DOT and the state Public Service Commission and Department of Public Safety worked together with the Georgia Motor Trucking Association to develop the plans.
"That wreck on Aug. 31, on I-285 and Ashford Dunwoody Road, was an example of a trucker who apparently went to sleep, and the wreck Friday on I-85 between Ga. 317 and Old Peachtree Road in Gwinnett County was another example of a trucker trying to push through the metro area at rush hour," Shackelford says.
The plan also includes more enforcement of truck violations, electronic warning signs about delays and rush hours at area weigh stations, and truck parking spots at weigh stations and rest areas. Atlanta Journal and Constitution (09/18/99) P. 2F; Smith, Gita M.

tanton's pelvis and hip joints were seriously injured and he has undergone surgery 52 different times.
