Narrower Trucks Could Be Added to State Ban

New Jersey Transportation Department officials say they are thinking about expanding the state's executive order banning out-of-state trucks on some state highways to cover 96-inch-wide trucks in addition to the wider trucks already under the ban's purview.

While the department has concluded that federal rules would allow such an extension of the ban, "we think it is appropriate to implement the restrictions on 102-inch trucks, monitor that and then make the decision to extend the provisions," says department spokesman John Dourgarian.

The ban forces the wider trucks to stay on the federally designated National Truck Network unless they have deliveries in New Jersey. Many residents and leaders have asked the state to add
