Aeva, Daimler Truck Expand Lidar Deal for Autonomy

“Autonomous-ready” Freightliner trucks equipped with Aeva’s 4D lidar sensors are now operating on public roads in Texas, marking a step in Daimler Truck’s development of self-driving freight vehicles, the companies announced July 16.

The announcement follows an expansion of Aeva’s partnership with Daimler Truck North America, which includes additional nonrecurring funding to support the transition to series production. The move builds on Aeva’s role as the selected production lidar supplier for ϳԹ, an independent subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG focused on Level 4 autonomous trucks.

Aeva plans to increase production capacity to 200,000 lidar units annually to support multiple customers, including Daimler Truck.



“We are proud to deepen our relationship with Daimler Truck North America,” said Soroush Salehian, co-founder and CEO of Aeva. “This investment enables us to accelerate delivering high-performance sensing capabilities … as we increase the production capacity of our 4D lidar in North America.”

Aeva’s 4D lidar uses frequency modulated continuous wave technology, which allows it to measure both range and velocity simultaneously using a low-power continuous laser beam. The sensors can detect objects up to 500 meters away and are designed for use in high-speed environments.

“Our collaboration with Aeva continues to strengthen as we move closer to series production,” said Joanna Buttler, general manager of product strategy and market development at Daimler Truck North America. “The performance, reliability and scalability of Aeva’s 4D lidar technology will make it a key component of our strategy.”

The Freightliner Cascadia trucks now in testing are considered “autonomous-ready,” equipped with sensing systems intended to support future deployment of Level 4 automation in freight transport.
